Manuel works on material-based strategies for tissue repair and regeneration, and engineers in vitro 3D models to understand physiology, disease and as platforms for drug testing. Together with key local and international collaborators, his group addresses a broad range of topics within this field, including the design of advanced biomaterials/biointerfaces, growth factors and their interactions with the extracellular matrix and stem cell engineering. He targets translational research to address unmet clinical needs such as bone regeneration in critical size defects as well as radical new approaches to control stem cells using synthetic biology.
